Today’s fire crept dangerously close to the Sundial Bridge (within 20 yards) and actually burned approximately 130 acres between North Market Street and Hilltop Drive. For residents along Hilltop Drive, this fire hit close to home with quick evacuations to local “temporary” evacuation sites. For many senior citizens a quick unscheduled trip to the Mt. Shasta Mall was in store when the Kirkwood facility bus dropped them there for a quick escape from the fire. It was there where I met my own grandmother who is a resident of the Mountain Vistas complex. Walking into the food court at the mall I was greeted by around 50 seniors…all with a tale to tell about their quick trip….er….forced fun outing. For many, their daily ritual was interrupted and they were anxious and ready to return home for their afternoon naps and scheduled routine.
Luckily, as quick as they were dropped off, they were again picked up by the bus and returned home. The all-clear was given and the fire was under control and would not harm any residences. Alas, our wonderful firefighters had done their job…saved the lives and homes of our residents and all would rest well.
